The major exhibition “Buddha” has gathered together 220 top-class exhibits dating back over the last two thousand years making the world of Buddha and its integral worldview really come alive.
Masterpieces of Buddhist art from the region of antiquity of Gandahar (located in the former Nordwest India), India, China, Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, Nepal and Tibet, recreate an image of the oldest world religion and the defining portrait of Buddha.
The most significant collectors have opened their treasure chambers for the “Buddha” exhibition. Many of these exhibits will appear before the public eye for the very first time. The objects come solely from private collections and have never before been seen in such magnitude.
For devout Buddhists portraits of Buddha assist them on the path to enlightenment. In the exhibition “Buddha” meditation images invite the visitor to deepen his/her understanding of the diverse visual world of Buddha.
The path to enlightenment – 8 stations
On its grounds of over 600,000m² the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks has set up a “path of enlightenment” with eight meditation stations. Here the western world of industry culture encounters the eastern world of Buddhist meditation. Alongside academic readings and lectures the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks, in its extensive accompanying programme, is offering guided tours, mediation and special events.
