It was a harmony walk from the Al-Istighfar mosque in Pasir Ris to the Loyang Tua Pek Kong temple which ended with a donation of $10,000 from the temple to help with the mosque’s upgrading.
The upgrading, starting next month, will cost $1.5 million. The mosque will be repainted, and the bulk of the cost will go to the new lift, which will be installed.
Dr Ahmad Mohamed Magad, who is an MP for Pasir-Ris Punggol GRC, said the donation was a ‘testimony to the generosity of our community here regardless of racial and cultural background’.
He added that the temple’s donation was a ‘generous gesture’, adding that there have been similar donations made by the Buddhist Lodge to organisations like Jamiyah Singapore, which among other things, runs homes for children and the destitute.
Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who was at the cheque presentation ceremony, said the temple has done well in organising multi-ethnic and multi-religious events.
Chairman of the mosque Kassim Kamis said that this was not the first time the temple had helped the mosque. Previously, it donated rice during the fasting months.
