His Holiness the Dalai Lama has encouraged the younger generation of Tibetans to take more interest in Buddhism by “studying its teachings through the science of debate and reasoning”.

“During my recent visits to the Indian states of Orrisa, Patna and Gujarat, I found many people are showing keen interest in Buddhism. I always tell the people who are interested in Buddhism to study it through Buddhist science, science of mind and Buddhist philosophy,” His Holiness told a gathering of over 2,300 Tibetan students at the Tibetan Children’s Village School in Dharamsala yesterday.

His Holiness was giving the 4th annual Buddhism introductory discourse for the Tibetan youths.

His Holiness emphasised that “people should have faith in Buddhism through reasoning and not by mere blind faith”.

His Holiness further said “Buddhism can bring happiness in this and in the future if one wholeheartedly study and practise the Buddhist teachings”.

His Holiness said “the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism can immensely benefit the wellbeing of the entire humanity.” “We Tibetans should feel proud since the complete set of Buddha Shakyamuni’s teaching is available only in Tibetan language,” His Holiness added.

Prior to the teaching, two groups of avid students, including elderly Tibetans and foreigners, debated on Buddhist philosophy. They are part of a larger group of students who are being trained by the Buddhism Introductory Committee through conducting regular classes throughout the year.

Praising the two groups, His Holiness “underlined the importance of introducing the traditional methodology of Buddhist dialectics into the school curriculum”.

His Holiness also answered a set of questions from the students.

The two-day teaching is being attended by students from the Upper TCV, Mussoorie, Shimla, Dalhousie, Dehradun, Orrissa, Sherab Gatsel Lobling in Dharamsala and 54 different colleges in India.
