MATSUYAMA — A 30-year-old former Buddhist monk has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for killing a 37-year-old woman whose body was discovered in her apartment in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, last December.

The Matsuyama District Court heard that Yoshinori Kurumi, a monk at Chokenji temple in Tokushima city, fatally stabbed Miki Kuroda in the neck with a survival knife on Dec 15, Fuji TV reported.

Kuroda had met Kurumi during one of her frequent trips to Tokushima for work.

Kurumi confessed to the crime. Police said he had driven his car to Matsuyama, killed Kuroda, and then returned home after throwing the knife into the sea.
