Amitabha Buddhist Centre

Amitabha Buddhist Centre (ABC) was officially established on 1 Jan 1989.

Amitabha Buddhist Centre is a centre for the study and practice of Mahayana Buddhism, based on the Gelug tradition of Lama Tsong Khapa, in the lineage of Lama Thubten Yeshe and Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

ABC is affiliated to the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), an international, non-profit organisation, founded by Lama Yeshe. The FPMT is devoted to the transmission of Mahayana Buddhist tradition worldwide through teaching, meditation and community service.

ABC offers opportunities for the study and practice of Mahayana Buddhism through public talks, publication of free Dharma books, Buddhist study courses, meditation classes, pujas, animal liberation, community service, recreational activities, retreats, and pilgrimages.

ABC’s origins go back to 1984 when Lama Yeshe visited Singapore and gave our centre its name. Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s connection with Singapore began in the mid-1980s. While he was on retreat in India, Rinpoche had a very strong instinct about having a Dharma centre in Singapore. He saw how the Dharma would greatly benefit a growing number of affluent Singaporeans. The feeling became so overwhelming that by the end of his retreat, he resolved to go to Singapore at all costs and establish a Dharma centre, which he did in 1985.

Ven. Dieter was the first teacher. Other former resident teachers include Ven. Thubten Chodron, Ven. Sangye Khadro, Ven. Sarah Thresher and Geshe Dawa. Our current resident teacher is Geshe Thubten Chonyi, who has been with us since 1999.

The continuing growth of ABC is due to the kindness of those who have helped the centre: the spiritual teachers, members, volunteers, donors, sponsors, benefactors, and especially our Spiritual Director Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

The seven-storey building offers:

– 10,000 square feet of space for classes, meditation and events

– a main prayer hall with a capacity for 300 people

– a conference room

– a meditation room on the mezzanine floor

– a second prayer hall on 4th floor

– a library

– a shop with a range of books, handicrafts and holy objects
