Disgraced Buddhist monk Ming Yi, jailed six months in May, was released from prison on Thursday morning and is now on the Home Detention Scheme (HDS).
The founder of Ren Ci Hospital will serve the rest of his sentence at home with an electronic tag around his ankle and under a strict curfew.
The monk had been convicted in November last year on four charges related to an unauthorised $50,000 loan granted to his personal assistant Raymond Yeung from Ren Ci Hospital’s coffers in May 2004 and was jailed 10 months.
These charges included falsifying a payment voucher and giving false information to the Commissioner of Charities.
Yeung, 35, who was jailed nine months for two charges, is still serving out his sentence at the Changi Prison.
But, Ming Yi had his sentence cut by four months upon appeal in the High Court in May.
