Sri Lanka — A programme to develop Buddhist temples in rural areas will be implemented

Colombo, Sri Lanka — A programme to develop Buddhist temples in rural areas will be implemented in line with the 2600th Sambuddha Jayanthi ceremony to be held next year. Accordingly, facilities in the Buddhist temples of remote areas will be upgraded. Priority will be given to the Buddhist temples in the northern and eastern provinces under this programme.

The Sambuddha Jayanthi operational committee held a special discussion at the Temple Trees on Aug 2nd in this connection. Participating at the discussion Chairman of the committee venerable Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera said each individual should support this programme as it leads to create an ethical society in the country.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa pointed out that the Sambuddha Jayanthi anniversary will be organized in the manner to secure the rights of all religious groups in the island. The President also directed the officials to focus the attention on conserving the archeological size in the remote areas.

A large number of leading Buddhist clergy and top state officials participated at the discussion. Meanwhile, Prime Minister D.M. Jayarathne has been appointed as the co-chairman of the Sambuddha Jayanthi operation committee.
