The Government and the World Buddhist Congress Headquarters will hold the 60th anniversary conference of the World Buddhist Congress in Sri Lanka from November 13 to 17, 2010. “The All Ceylon Buddhist Congress will coordinate the conference”, an All Ceylon Buddhist Congress spokesman told the Daily News. “This will be a great opportunity for Sri Lanka to host the World Buddhist Conference meeting”, he said.

The decision had been taken to hold this international Buddhist Conference in Sri Lanka after the discussion with Prime Minister D M Jayaratna and the Government officials.

Prime Minister’s Media Secretary Sisira Wijesinghe told the Daily News that a delegation of 700 persons will participate in this Conference. The World Buddhist Congress will also be held along with the Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi in 2011. The main purpose of the organizers is to spread Theravada Buddhism throughout the world.

To map out the basic steps, the World Buddhist Conference, Director General Palop Thiyari arrived in Sri Lanka and held several rounds of discussions with the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress Chairman Jagath Sumathipala, the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress spokesman added.

The first conference of the World Buddhist Congress was held in Sri Lanka in 1950 and later in 1972 and 1984.
