The Tibetan spirtual leader Dalai Lama will visit Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh’s Nubra valley to give a series of teachings and bless a new Maitreya statue at the region’s oldest and largest monastery. The week-long visit begins 21 July.
He will give teachings at Samstanling Monastery in Sumur from 21 – 22 July. On July 23 Dalai Lanma will give the oral transmission of The Diamond Sutra (dorje chotpa) at Yarma Gonbo Monastery.
He will lead the blessing ceremony (rabney) of the new Maitreya statue at Diskit Monastery, which is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra valley of Ladakh. The monastery is famous for its murals, one of which depicts a fresco of the Tashilhunpo Monastery of Tibet.
Built during 14th century by a disciple of Je Tsongkhapa, founder of Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism, Diskit monastery is situated on the hill, just above the flood plains of the Shayok River, on its right bank in the Diskit village (10,315 ft).
His Holiness will give teachings on Geshe Langri Thangpa’s Eight Verses of Training the Mind (lojong tsik gyema) and Tsongkhapa’s The Three Principal Paths (lamtso namsum) at Disket Phodrang from 26 – 27 July.
The Nubra Valley lies north of Leh in India’s northern state of Jammu and Kashmir and is accessible over the Khardung la (18,380 ft), one of the highest motorable roads in the world.
