A three-part exhibition that highlights India’s Buddhism tradition and the life of the widely revered human rights champion Mahatma Ghandi is being held at the National Central Library.

“The teachings of Buddha are closely related to the teachings of Ghandi, as they both taught non-violence and respect for all forms of life,” said Pradeep Kumar Rawat, director-general of the India-Taipei Association and one of the organizers of the exhibition titled “Exquisite India.”

The first of the photo exhibits, “Mahatma Ghandi, Apostle of Peace” is dedicated to the spiritual leader who is fondly known in India as the “Father of the Nation” because of his struggles against the British for India’s independence.

The exhibit comprises 50 pictures depicting Ghandi’s humanitarian services, such as his work tending to the sick and the afflicted and visiting inmates of Calcutta prison.

This is the first photography exhibit on Ghandi to be held in Taiwan, said Rawat.

The second of the photographic exhibits, titled “The Path of Compassion”, traces the life of Buddha and shows various Buddhist holy sites and monuments in India. The pictures were taken by the renowned photographer Benoy K. Behl.

The exhibit also features photographs of heritage sites and relics from both the Theraveda and Mahayan branches of Buddhism, according to Karl Min Ku, the library’s director-general.

These include the Gilded Statue of the Parinirvana, the entrance and railings of the Bharhut Stupa and other religious sites, he said.

Pictures of four of India’s 29 UNESCO World Heritage sites are also on display.

Visitors to the exhibition will have an opportunity to learn more about India from the 157 books on India’s history and current affairs donated to the library by the ITA.

The exhibition will run from July 6-18 and admission is free.
