A Buddhist leader on the Queens Birthday Honours list this year

A total of four honoured residents made the list which was announced on Monday.

Mohini Indira Gunasekera of Oatlands was named a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the Sri Lankan community, to Buddhism through leadership and support of a range of organisations, and to interfaith dialogue.

Ms Gunaskera, who is overseas this week, is current trustee and treasurer, University Buddhist Education Foundation (UBEF).

She established the trust to fund library centres in villages throughout Sri Lanka. Ms Gunasekera provides ongoing support to a Sri Lankan village to promote the learning of English through prizes as well as providing computers, encyclopedias, dictionaries and other books. Ms Gunasekera also established the Lankarama building fund to support a school as part of Schofield’s Sri Lankan temple.

Ms Gunasekera has a string of other commitments in the Sri Lankan and Buddhist communities, including being a lawyer doing pro bono work for organisations, including the Sri Lankan consulate. (…)
