Sounds of chanting drifted across Lake Ginninderra yesterday as ancient relics of Buddha were unveiled at the Belconnen Arts Centre.

The relics were escorted by traditional Sri Lankan dancers and drummers on Vesak Day the celebration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing away.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Joy Birch said the exhibition provided a rare opportunity for Canberrans to view the sacred items before they were preserved in a Sydney shrine.

”Although other Buddhist relics have been shown in Australia, this is the first time Australia will permanently house such valuable relics,” she said.

Joining Ms Birch at the unveiling were Buddhist Federation of Australia president Phrapalad Sudhammo, Sri Lankan high commissioner Senaka Walgampaya, and Thailand ambassador Kriangsak Kittichaisaree.
