Is it true that spiritual people couldn’t be bothered with winning in life? Are they in fact not bothered about such things?

Disagrees naturopath and Muktananda follower Rita Dhody, “Spiritual people set their own benchmark to winning in life. For most people, ‘winning’ is about winning a job, an award or some sort of financial security. For someone like me the benchmark to victory is the happiness I feel within my life.

This happiness is a natural by-product of living in the state of heightened awareness that comes with spiritual practices like meditation and contemplation. Everything you want and need in life can be achieved if one lives with heightened awareness.”

Says actor Tisca Chopra, a practising Buddhist, “Self mastery is
the goal of all spiritual activity. You can quite simply create the life you want by mastering your mind. As a Buddhist I believe in the ultimate law of the Universe — that of the simultaneity of Cause and Effect. One becomes mindful of one’s causes in thought, word and deed. And by changing these one can get completely different results in the world we live in.”

What difference has spirituality made to their lives? Says Rita, “For me spirituality is all about helping me achieve internal victory over my own weaknesses — it’s about not succumbing to temptation. The only person I’m competing with in this regard is myself. It’s about dealing with your own limitations and crossing them to achieve victory.”

Says actor Tisca Chopra, “Buddhism has changed my life. I used to be an introverted and confused person who had ambitions but no way of achieving them. Strong Buddhist practice made me sure of myself and the ability to write my own destiny. I see that I have deeper relationships than before. I feel I’m growing each day into my own infinite potential and that makes me very happy. I am also becoming a better actor.”

What then is their definition of an ultimate victory in life? Rita opines, “For me, ultimate victory in life is achieving the state of ultimate happiness within. When despite all the challenging pushes and pulls of life I find a steady equilibrium within and can feel joy for myself and compassion for others as well as a sense of gratitude for life — that is truly winning in life.”

Concludes Tisca, “Personally speaking, ultimate victory in life has two aspects: firstly the ability to feel absolutely free…of the fear of one’s own death and that of loved ones. And secondly it’s the insight to see the interconnectedness between all life.If I hurt another, I am ultimately hurting myself.”
