A group of Buddhist monks recently held a walk for peace that took them over the Veterans Memorial Bridge between Beverly and Salem.

Monks from New England Peace Pagoda in Leverett, Mass., are trekking through New England in a show of support for peace and a nuclear-free world. Their destination is the United Nations in New York, where the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons will be held.

The monks’ journey brought them to Salem on Thursday, where they met up with local residents and members of the Salem and Marblehead peace committees. At the Veterans Memorial Bridge, the group walked across and into Salem, where they made their way to Riley Plaza.

Afterward, a potluck supper and discussion was planned at First Church Unitarian. The church was also planning to house the monks overnight to make their visit possible.
