Human Rights’ activist killed in Chechnya

Natalia Estemirova had fought for Human Rights in Russia for many years. Close to Anna Politkovskaïa, the murder of this woman is unfortunately not a big surprise since she was often threatened to death. Human Rights’ activists all over Russia are deeply shocked by the information of her death.

On the 15th of July, Natalia Estemirova left her flat to go to work at 8:30 when she was forced to enter in a white van. Since she did not return her relatives’ calls, they went to her flat and ask the neighbours if they saw her. Later in the afternoon, her body was found on a road near a wood in Ingushetia.

Natalia Estemirova worked for the organization entitled Memorial, who is implemented in Grozny, Chechnya. The office of Memorial is used to welcoming journalists, lawyers, activists and victims. Natalia Estemirova knew all about every file followed by the organization.

Natalia Estemirova knew her life was in danger. According to Dmitri Mouratov, editor in chief of Novaïa Gazeta, she was warned by her friends that Chechnyan athorities could kill her at any time. Activists accuse president Kadyrov of being responsible for her murder.

This kidnapping and this execution actually reveals the impunity of murderers in this part of Russia. Dmitri Medvedev talked about a deep shock concerning Estemirova’s death, while Kadyrov announced he would supervise the investigation.
