A buddhist prayer service was held on Monday morning to honour the victims of last Tuesday’s light plane disaster.

Members of the Australian Chinese Buddhist Society gathered in prayer at the Canley Vale home which narrowly avoided being hit during last week’s tragedy.

The wreckage crashed into the frontyard, bursting into flames and killing both people on board the aircraft.

The service was held to cleanse the scene and pray for the victims of the crash.

Thanh Pham, who helped the small congregation travel from their Bonnyrigg temple to the house, said that while family was not present, the service was held at their request.

“The family asked for our prayers,” he said. “We need to pray for the souls (of the dead).”

Participants held hands and prayed silently in the 30-minute service, as small bells were rung throughout the house. Offerings of fruit were arranged on an altar, in keeping with Vietnamese custom.

They also burned incense, which is used in Buddhist ceremonies to purify the surroundings.

Mr Pham described the service as “peaceful”.
