Tu Dam pagoda was inaugurated in the the central city of Hue on March 30 after three year of restoration.
A grand inaugural ceremony was held on the same day by the Thua Thien – Hue province’s Buddhist Sangha.
The restoration of the pagoda started in 2007 with a total capital of VND 13.5 billion (around US$ 711,000) contributed by Buddhists at home and abroad.
The pagoda was founded in late 17th century by Zen Master Minh Hoang – Tu Dung, who was the 34th generation of the Lam Te Zen lineage.
In 1951, the pagoda was the venue for a meeting of Buddhist monks across the country to establish the Vietnam General Association of Buddhism. In 1963, it was chosen as the starting point for the struggle against religious discrimination and Ngo Dinh Diem’s dictatorship.
The pagoda has been closely associated with the spiritual life of Buddhists in Hue city in particular and in the whole country in general.
