Triple Gem of the North is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study and practice of the teachings of the Buddha. Triple Gem sponsors meditation and Sutta study events, as well as meditation retreats.
The teachings are given freely in the spirit of dana (selfless generosity). Those who wish may also practice dana by offering a donation to Bhante Sathi, so that he may continue his work. At the end of events and retreats, tax-deductible donations are also accepted for Triple Gem of the North.
The long-term goal is to build a retreat center where people can come to meditate for any period of time, supported by resident teachers of the dhamma. On a periodic basis, the center will sponsor retreats lead by resident or visiting teachers. There will also be weekly meditation and Buddhist study classes. The center will operate on a dana basis; there will be no charge to those who wish to practice. Donations received by Triple Gem of the North that exceed current operating expenses are set aside for the retreat center.
Bhante Sathi is a monk in the Theravada tradition. He was born in Kandy, Sri Lanka and his spiritual interests began in his early teenage years. He was ordained as a novice monk at age 19 and received his training under Wattegama Dhammawasa Maha Thera at Sri Subhodaramaya International Bikkhu Center in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He received higher ordination after three years of education and practice. As a fully ordained monk, he taught meditation and counseled mainly young adults in Sri Lanka.
In September 1999, Bhante Sathi traveled to the United States to teach and practice at the Great Lakes Buddhist Vihara in Southfield, Michigan. While at GLBV, Bhante Sathi received further training from Bhante Brahmanagama Muditha Thero.
Bhante Sathi was invited to Minnesota in 2004 and has stayed here ever since, traveling frequently between Chanhassen, the Twin Cities, and Mankato to teach meditation. He has also taught extensively and conducted retreats in other parts of Minnesota.
Bhante Sathi has a particular interest in what is common to all traditions and all schools of Buddhism, particularly the practice of meditation. Since coming to Minnesota, Bhante dreamed of opening a meditation center where people of all traditions could come together and practice. With this long-term goal in mind, he established Triple Gem of the North, a organization dedicated to the practice and teaching of meditation and dhamma.
