Thai Scriptures fly to Norway

Thailand –The Buddhist Federation of Norway will receive next week a 40 volumed set of Tipitaka scriptures carried from Thailand by air, as a part of the Princess Galyani Vadhana’s Tipitaka Endowment Project, said the reports.

According to Thai media, on 17 august, in Royal Thailand embassy Oslo, the World Tipitaka Edition, 40-volume scriptures in Roman script will be handed to Nowegian buddhists by representatives of Dhamma Society Fund, a Thai charitable organisation in the Buddhist Theravada Tradition that is in charge of the publication of the scriptures.

The Tipitaka, passing teachings from 2500 years ago of the Buddhist Theravada tradition, is especially produced for Norway in a romanaised edition, and is conferred as a royal gift from Thailand to Buddhist Federation of Norway in 2008, after the funeral of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana.

Egil Lothe, president of The Buddhist Federation of Norway, expressed his appreciation to ScandAsia News, pointing out that the scriptures have a practical and symbolic significance to those who practice Buddhism in Norway : “The gift is a great encouragement and acknowledgement of our efforts in this organisation.”

The flight of the scriptures to Norway of 3.9 million air-miles is offered for free by Thai Airways company.
